Connecting
Install the Probe GitHub App from the Integrations page and choose which repositories it can see. Webhooks terminate on the Probe API; nothing is mirrored into a separate store. Scope is a list ofowner/repo entries, up to 500. GitHub content lands in team Knowledge, not in a workspace.
Connecting GitHub is generally available to every team. Some accounts gate the project Code tab behind a per-user flag, but the connection itself, the webhook that feeds content to the index, and the published README read are never gated.A gated route answers 404 rather than 403, so the gate does not advertise a feature you cannot use — and the dashboard omits the surfaces instead of drawing controls that would only 404.
Attaching a repo to a project
probe project code detach) loses nothing. Attaching grants no access: the repository must already be covered by the team’s GitHub App installation, or be public. --branch and --path (a monorepo subtree) narrow what is followed.

A line containing onlyBackfill from a checkout
When you pointprobe backfill at a folder that is a GitHub checkout, it recognises this: it checks the existing integration’s access, uses bounded commit history as context for describing the work, and reuses or attaches the corresponding code source after placement review.
File and Git reconstruction drafts are saved for explicit publication review — the agent’s reading of a repository is a draft, not a published document.
